Days of experiment
At least: 30 days
Dream plan: 3 months
My reasons to do it
- [ ] Conscious consumption (buy less & own less)
- [ ] Avoid impulse buy
- [ ] Track my spending
- [ ] Get used to run a wishlist (instead of buying)
- [ ] See how much I can save on unnecessary stuff
- [ ] Spend less time on shopping / researching things I want to buy
Rules
- [ ] No new clothes
- [ ] No personal care (unless it's an empty bottle and there is nothing else)
- [ ] No household items (unless something will run out)
- [ ] No coffee/snacks to go
- [ ] No takeout food
- [ ] No improvement items (decor, furniture, and no kitchen tools)
- [ ] no long-lasting food (do pantry decluttering instead)
- [ ] no books & magazines (use library)
- [ ] not buying anything for my hobbies
- [ ] no new paid apps or services
- [ ] no new gadgets (even for my blogs!)
- [ ] no paid beauty or self-care procedures
- [ ] no new plants!
- [ ] no pet items & snacks (we have enough)
Exceptions
- [ ] rent & utility bills
- [ ] urgent medical expenses
- [ ] any payments towards investments, debt pay off, etc
- [ ] any expenses that
are non-avoidable (fees & fines)
- [ ] grocery (but limit to once a month and ONLY with a shopping list)
- [ ] Snacks are allowed if they are bought with other groceries
- [ ] restaurants (in moderation: when meeting friends or for date nights)
- [ ] if anything essential runs out (i.e. toothpaste) or breaks (coffee machine)
- [ ] gifts (unless they can be handmade or avoided altogether)
- [ ] travel
- [ ] necessary expenses planned in advance (i.e. camping gear for an upcoming trip)
Cheats allowed (after the first month)
- [ ] Any take out food if bought by my partner
- [ ] Camping gear if absolutely necessary and if from the wishlist created a long time ago
- [ ] Needed items for fishing (but only the absolute bare minimum!)
- [ ] (more cheats to be added after the first month)
Things that might be challenging for me
- [ ] Not buying anything for my new hobbies
- [ ] not buying any clothes (even thrifted) - I am working on my new style ;-/
- [ ] not buying any takeout (we do it quite often)
- [ ] camping and fishing gear (we are missing some essential things)
- [ ] not buying new home stuff (i.e. I technically need new shelves and few containers...)
- [ ] not paying for new apps/services
- [ ] buying grocery only based on the shopping list
What can help me with this experiment
- [ ] Experiment with swapping instead of buying
- [ ] Rent instead of buy (to own less!)
- [ ] Pantry decluttering
- [ ] Declutter & resell clothes and other things
- [ ] Finally, start to mend/sew my own clothes
- [ ] Keep a track of expenses and figure out how much I spend per category
- [ ] Organize my closet and see if there are items that are truly missing - create a wishlist
- [ ] Get inspired to cook more at home
- [ ] Keep a diary of this experiment to make it fun
